Terrible News

It’s been a long time since I posted and I hate that my first post in months is about something shitty. The owner of the Grit died today, from a fall from the parking deck in downtown Athens. My first inclination is that he committed suicide but we don’t know for sure.

My heart goes out to his family, and the Grit family.

It’s no exaggeration that the Grit is one of the reasons that I wanted to move back to Athens. The thought of being able to go to that restaurant any time that I wanted drew me back to this town ( the other thing was the Engine Room). I hope that it is able to survive this, but who knows. I know that I will continue to go there as long as it is open.

i actually ended up helping a couple who turned out to be from athens on monday. they said he had been in a car accident during the summer in which he was hit by a car at the cross walk in front of the Coop.

some folks thought he stepped out intentionally. it’s all very f’d up. he had kids, wife, house, successful business and apparently that’s not what made his world go round.

my buddy jeff is a manager there and evidently his wife had been in charge of the restaraunt for the most part over the last number of months, and it’s open at the moment, so hopefully at least the store will remain open. fuck suicide.
