Bubba RIP 9-24-2004

My cat died yesterday. He was 18 years old, which is pretty old for a cat. My mom had to take him to the vet and put him to sleep. He wouldn’t eat anymore and it was just his time to go. All my friends from back home, if you read this, take some time to think of Bubba the cat.

Say it ain’t so

Damn. I don’t know how many of you reading this care about cycling, but right now some major shit is going on. Tyler Hamilton, the most respected American cyclist with the exception of you know who, has gotten himself in big trouble with the Vuelta a Espania, (Tour of Spain). They busted him for getting illegal blood transfusions. It seems he was trying to increase his red blood cell count to make himself a more efficient cyclist.

He hasn’t been found guilty yet, but if he is, I’m going to be super pissed. This guy has shown some extraordinary courage as a cyclist, riding through many injuries. Last year he fell on the first day of the Tour de France and broke his collar bone, an injury that would send most of us home to Mommy. He stuck it out and finished 4th! That’s fuckin awesome.

But all that will be for nothing if he’s found guilty. My respect for him will be washed away, along with a lot of my desire to care about cycling as a sport. I’m hoping for the best, but bracing for the worst.

Straight butter

Anyone remember the commercial a few years back where there are these kids playing basketball and they are talking trash. This one little white kid, in a monotone voice, says:

“Straight butter baby. We’re going to the fat farm.”

I would give my left nut for a link to the video of that commercial.

Sleepy Strange

Tonight I went to the Morton Theater and saw Japancakes play. It’s been a while since I’ve seen them. They were one of the last bands I saw before I left Athens for Erie 3 years ago. They are really quite good. I love good instrumental music. I also love John Neff’s pedal steel guitar. That sound really takes me back.

What is he saying when he plays? Have you ever noticed that his mouth moves while he’s playing. I’d love to know what’s being said.

In the dark

So the power was out for most of the night here. Lots of trees and limbs and whatnot are everywhere. We didn’t get hit too hard, but there were some tornadoes and things. I spent most of tonight talking on the phone with my brother who is living it up in NYC.

He’s going through some craziness right now, but sounds like he’s got a good handle on it. That’s good to hear. It always makes me feel good to know that he’s on top of things. I really wish I could see him and talk to him more, but it’s just not in the cards right now.

Tomorrow is Friday. Hard to believe I made it through the week. Went downtown last night and had a little bit too much fun. I’ll have to go easy this week. My stamina is shot to hell after working so long.

Tim Reid

Who was Tim Reid and what did he star in? Saw him on an episode of That 70’s show at the Engine room tonight and got stumped…..

OK, thanks to IMDB, he was the token black guy in the Stephen King movie IT.

Jeep adventure

I drove to Peachtree City today to buy some tires for my jeep. This guy from the Southern Jeeps website www.southernjeeps.org had a pretty sweet deal. I ended up saving myself about 400 bucks. anyway, my jeep is now way sweeter than it was. I jumped from 29 inch tires to 31 inch and got some black steel rims, all for $350 bucks. I’m stoked. Pictures will follow tomorrow.

This weekend, Japancakes are playing at the Morton Theater on Friday. My favorite Athens band for two reasons. Johnny Neff on pedal steel (from the star room boys) and Heather Macintosh from E6, and also the first person I met in athens while she was working at the Jittery Joes at 5 points. that was almost 10 years ago. So I’m goin to the show. Anyone in town not going to Austin City Limits should be there.

Week from Hell

Ok, so I worked all weekend. So I’m looking at an 11 day week, of about 10 to 12 hours a day. And it just so happens that this week I’m dealing with some serious pain in the ass shit at work. I’m going to be ready to hit the town hard this weekend. If I make it there in one piece. Charlie and Brent are both out of town so I don’t really know what I’m going to do. My circle of friends is pretty small these days. Everyone seems to be moving to New York as fast as they can.

I would very much like to play pool and get drunk. See, I’m easy to please. The weekend after I’m going to Dothan with Brent to pick up the Stang (maybe). So this is my time to live it up a little.

If I make it in one piece. I swear it’s going to be a struggle.

Debian

So as a hobby, I’ve begun trying to get Debian linux working on my computer. I got together with Charlie and Brent yesterday and have been screwing with this since. I can see why Linux isn’t widespread. Installing it and getting it configured is not easy.

Right now I’m working on getting the graphical interface working. Of course the drivers for my video card aren’t included on the installation CD, so I have to download them. And when I try to install them, it can’t find the source code for my kernel. I don’t remember having the option to install that….good thing this is just a hobby. Although I will say that I’ve learned a lot just in the short time I’ve been working on it. I’ll keep pluggin away at it.

addicted

Why am I addicted to internet social sites? Charlie turned me on to this one. www.dodgeball.com. It’s not what you think, it has nothing to do with dodgeball. If you have a cell phone with text messaging, you should go sign up. It looks pretty cool.

The Buy

I ran into my old pal Andy in the parking lot of Kroger tonight. He and I used to work together at Best Buy. I haven’t been in that place in many years. I worked there from 97 to 99. A lot of the people I used to work with are still there. Some I’d like to see. Some I would not. So I’ll avoid the place.

Any BBers read this, drop me a line.

i-neighbors.org

Anyone in Athens who reads this should go to www.i-neighbors.org and sign up for an account. Use the zip 30601 and sign up for Downtown Athens. It looks like a kick ass site and there should be more Athens folks using it.

Local music?

My situation, in case you don’t know it, is that I’ve recently moved back to Athens after a 3 year hiatus in Erie Pennsylvania. When I left, I had a few bands that I regularly would go see play…The Star Room Boys, Japancakes (not exactly regularly), Elf Power…

Now that I’m back and not poor anymore, who should I go see? I would like some recommendations. Tell me who and why. I’d like to throw some music into my weekly get-drunk-play-pool routine.

Typical Saturday Night

Yesterday was a long day for me. I went to my first Georgia football game yesterday, and it was fun. I baked in the sun for many hours though. Have you ever noticed how you actually cook your brain when you are out in the sun? I just felt funny afterwards. Maybe I was just dehydrated….

Anyway, after Meghan, Travis, Heather, and I ate sushi, I took Meghan home and put her to bed. Then I drove down to the Go Bar and parked. After checking into the Go Bar and finding no one, I headed over to Room 13, henceforth known as the Engine Room. Sure enough, Brent and Geoff were there playing pool.

I ran into my friend Chris who began buying me whiskey shots. I can’t remember how many I had, but after that the pool playing got good. Somewhere in there I lost Brent and Geoff. The girls they were with were having some kind of weird situation.

Speaking of weird situations, I ran into my ex girlfriend Emily. Talking with her was awkward. She seems to be doing very well though, which I’m glad for.

I was kind of hoping Brent and his friends would have stuck around. I don’t know them very well and they seem like a lot of fun. I’m sure I’ll see them Thursday at Indie Rock Karaoke. That reminds me, I need to get my songs together…Magnetic Fields and Morphine!

Jumping right in

Hey everyone. This is my new website. I’ve been workin on it all day long. It should go without saying that this is a work in progress that I’ll be messing with for years to come. But I think I’m off to a good start.

No big kickoff speech. I’ll just get right to it. Keep watching this spot.
